Places to See
The Diag
913 S University Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48109
“The Diag”, originally called the “Diagnol Green”, is a large open space and is easily the busiest street on campus. It is housed in the center of the Central Campus and is known to be a place to find demonstrators, concerts, political rallies, and fundraisers. It was given the name “Diag” because of the many diagonal sidewalks running throughout it. The center of “The Diag” holds a giant brass letter M. This bronze block was donated by U-M’s graduating class of 1953. This symbol has a superstition around it; legend has it that if a student steps on it before their first blue book exam, that they will end up failing that first blue book exam.
Shapiro Undergraduate Library
919 South University Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1185
The Shapiro Undergraduate Library is part of a larger library called the Shapiro Library, which also consists of the Shapiro Science Library and the Ashwith Media Library. The Shapiro Undergraduate Library, commonly referred to as the “UGLi” by students on campus, opened in 1958 and is one of the largest libraries on campus. This library was specifically made with undergraduate students in mind. It also consists of four floors (and a basement), with increasing noise level as one goes up each floor. The UGLi is a popular place for individuals to come study or to just catch up with their friends, and also provides many educational resources. In the foyer of the Library is Bert’s Café, which offers a coinvent location to refill on coffee, snacks, and meals.
