Athletics
The University of Michigan’s vibrant athletic traditions began in 1865 and has resulted in 50 national championships in 12 different sports. The school colors are blue and maize, and its mascot is the Wolverines. A common phrase heard by sports fans to cheer on their favorite team is “Go Blue!” The Michigan Wolverines consists of 29 different varsity sports teams, which all compete in the NCAA’S Division I. Most every sport is included as one of these teams, ranging from Women’s Gymnastics to Ice Hockey. Since the 2008 summer Olympics, 204 University of Michigan students and alumni have gone on to compete in the Olympics. Along with these varsity teams, U-M provides many club and intramural sports and other fitness activities.
Michigan Stadium
Michigan Stadium is the largest stadium in the United States and the Third Largest in the World. This Stadium is often referred to as “The Big House” and houses the University of Michigan’s football games. It was built in 1927 for about $950,000. Originally, its max capacity was around 72,000, but it has since been updated to fit around 110,000 people. This Stadium also holds the NFL record for all-time attendance when during a game against Notre Dame on September 7, 2013, 115,109 people were present. The first game in this stadium was on October 1, 1927, against Ohio Wesleyan. Going to football games is a common pastime for university students and a great way to show school spirit.
